Social Phobia Symptoms
Social phobia symptoms cripple its sufferers with an intense feeling of being watched or scrutinized. It can also result in actual physical symptoms that serve only to worsen the mindset of the sufferer. These physical social phobia symptoms can include one or more of the following:
- Profuse sweating
- Nausea
- Difficulty speaking
- Trembling
- Blushing
There are two different types of social phobia - generalized and specific. When a person is suffering from generalized social phobia, they are essentially fearful of everyone outside of their family. Specific social phobia is when an individual is terribly afraid of a singular social aspect, like speaking in front of a crowd or writing on a chalk board in front of a classroom. In each of these cases, the individual is extremely self-conscious and anxiously experiencing social phobia symptoms to the point where they can actually be mentally or physically, but not permanently, paralyzed.
Treatments for Social Phobias
Because so many people who suffer from social phobia tend to turn to alcohol or narcotics as a means of self-treatment, it is very common for patients to have an addiction to one or the other or both when they finally decide to seek professional help. This type of patient will then require a dual diagnosis program. Dual diagnosis treatment facilities specialize in getting the addiction managed as well as providing treatment for the secondary issue, such as a social phobia or another kind of mental issue like post traumatic stress disorder.
It is unfortunate that many people turn to alcohol or drugs prior to seeking help because social phobias are very responsive to medicinal and psychotherapy administrations, making it a very treatable condition.
