The Importance of Drug Rehab Aftercare

A well developed aftercare plan can prove as important as your stay in rehab. Lakeview Health creates an aftercare plan for each of its drug rehab patients prior to their discharge. During this drug rehab aftercare planning process each patient meets with their primary therapist to create an aftercare plan that is specifically designed to accentuate patient recovery maintenance. The aftercare plan is established to focus on many important issues that the newly released individual will have to face including employment, housing, support groups and psychiatric counseling, family concerns, etc.

Lakeview Health provides each individual with contact information for therapists, aftercare counseling etc. and even helps schedule appointments for all those being discharged. In addition, a map and vital information on 12 step support group locations is distributed to each of our recovering addicts. Each individual is strongly urged to attend these support groups as part of their relapse prevention aftercare plan.

The aftercare plan is a crucial component of any relapse prevention plan. We recognize that we are treating a disease and with every disease comes the possibility of relapse. Unfortunately, relapse occurs with drug addiction and alcoholism with greater frequency than with other diseases. While our aftercare plan is designed to help prevent relapse, it also teaches individuals the coping skills necessary if in fact they do relapse.

As a significant component of our dual diagnosis treatment program, our aftercare plan and relapse prevention program, focus on proper medication management, the recognition of drug addiction triggers and how to effectively deal with those triggers. In addition our aftercare plan educates addicts regarding unhealthy patterns in behavior and thought, while working towards resolving the core issues that fueled the initial self destructive behavior. There are no guarantees in drug rehab, but our experience has been that for those who actively participate in our relapse prevention program and carry out the aftercare plan, the likely hood of maintaining long term recovery is greatly enhanced.

The Family and Our Aftercare Plan

It only stands to reason that a family wants to see their loved one complete rehab and go on to live a happy, productive and drug free lives. While that is the case with most of our alumni, it is not true in every case. People do relapse and that relapse will affect the entire family.
